The suction cavity and the discharge cavity are separated by the meshing lines of the two gears. The pressure at the outlet of the gear pump depends entirely on the resistance at the pump outlet.
The concept of gear pump is very simple, its most basic form is two
gears of the same size in a closely matched housing meshing
rotation, the interior of the housing similar to the "8" shape, two
gears installed inside, the outer diameter of the gear and both
sides of the housing closely matched. The material from the
extruder enters the middle of the two gears at the suction inlet
and fills this space, moving along the housing with the rotation of
the teeth, and finally discharging when the two teeth mesh. In
terminology, gear pumps are also called positive displacement
devices, that is, like a piston in a cylinder, when a tooth enters
the fluid space of another tooth, because the liquid is
incompressible, the liquid and the tooth can not occupy the same
space at the same time, so that the liquid is mechanically squeezed
out. Due to the continuous meshing of the teeth, this phenomenon
occurs continuously, and thus provides a continuous exclusion at
the outlet of the pump, and the amount of discharge is the same
with each turn of the pump. With the continuous rotation of the
drive shaft, the pump continues to discharge fluid. Pump flow is
directly related to pump speed. In fact, there is a very small
amount of fluid loss in the pump, because these fluids are used to
lubricate the bearing and both sides of the gear, and the pump body
can never be matched without a gap, so the fluid can not be 100%
discharged from the outlet, so a small amount of fluid loss is
inevitable, which makes the pump operating efficiency can not reach
100%. However, the pump still works well and can still achieve 93%
to 98% efficiency for most extruded materials. Gear pump For fluids
with viscosity or density changes in the process, this pump will
not be much affected. If there is a damper, such as a filter or a
limiter on the side of the discharge outlet, the pump will push the
fluid through them. If this damper changes during operation, that
is, if the screen becomes dirty, clogged, or the back pressure of
the limiter increases, the pump will maintain a constant flow until
the mechanical limit of the weakest part of the device is reached
(usually with a torque limiter). The speed of a pump is actually
limited, depending on the process fluid. If oil is delivered, the
pump can turn at a very high speed, but when the fluid is a high
viscosity polymer melt, this limit is greatly increased. It is very
important to push the viscous fluid into the two-tooth space on the
suction side. If this space is not filled, the pump cannot
discharge the exact flow rate, so the PV value (pressure x flow
rate) is another limiting factor and a process variable. Because of
these limitations, gear pump manufacturers will offer a range of
products, that is, different specifications and displacement (the
amount of discharge per revolution). These pumps will be tailored
to specific application processes to optimize system capabilities
and prices. Gear pump PEP-II pump gear and shaft are integrated,
using the whole body hardening process, to obtain a longer working
life. The "D" bearing incorporates a forced lubrication mechanism
that allows the polymer to pass through the bearing surface and
return to the inlet side of the pump to ensure effective
lubrication of the rotating shaft. This property reduces the
likelihood of polymer retention and degradation. The precision
machined pump body allows the "D" bearing to match the gear shaft
precisely, ensuring that the gear shaft is not eccentric to prevent
gear wear. The Parkool seal structure and the PTFE lip seal
together form a water-cooled seal. This seal does not actually
touch the surface of the shaft, and its sealing principle is to
cool the polymer to a semi-molten state to form a self-sealing. It
can also be sealed with Rheoseal, which has a reverse spiral groove
machined on the inner surface of the shaft seal, allowing the
polymer to be reversed pressed back into the inlet. For ease of
installation, the manufacturer has designed a ring bolt mounting
surface to fit with the flange mounting of other equipment, which
makes the manufacture of barrel flanges easier. The PEP-II gear
pump comes with a heating element matching the pump specifications,
which can be selected by the user, which guarantees rapid heating
and heat control. Unlike the way the pump is heated, the damage to
these components is limited to one board and is not related to the
entire pump.
The gear pump is driven by an independent motor, which effectively
blocks upstream pressure pulsations and flow fluctuations. The
pressure pulsation at the outlet of the gear pump can be controlled
within 1%. The use of a gear pump in the extrusion line can
increase the flow output speed and reduce the shear and residence
time of the material in the extruder.
External gear pump is the most widely used gear pump, the general
gear pump usually refers to the external gear pump. Its structure
is shown in Figure 1, which is mainly composed of driving gear,
driven gear, pump body, pump cover and safety valve. The seal space
composed of the pump body, pump cover and gear is the workshop of
the gear pump. The shafts of the two gears are respectively
installed in the bearing holes on the two pump covers, and the
driving gear shaft extends out of the pump body and is driven by
the motor to rotate. External gear pump has simple structure, light
weight, low cost, reliable operation and wide application range.
When the gear pump works, the driving wheel rotates with the motor
and drives the driven wheel to rotate. When the meshing teeth on
one side of the suction chamber gradually separate, the volume of
the suction chamber increases, the pressure decreases, and the
liquid in the suction tube is sucked into the pump; The suction
liquid is pushed to the discharge chamber by the gear in two ways
in the tooth groove. After the liquid enters the discharge chamber,
the teeth of the two gears continue to mesh, so that the liquid is
squeezed from the discharge chamber into the discharge pipe. The
driving gear and driven gear keep rotating, and the pump can
continuously suck in and discharge liquid.
The pump body is equipped with a safety valve, when the discharge
pressure exceeds the specified pressure, the conveying liquid can
automatically open the safety valve, so that the high-pressure
liquid returns to the suction pipe.
The internal gear pump is composed of a pair of internal gears
meshing with each other and a crescent shaped part between them, a
pump shell, etc. The function of the crescent is to separate the
suction chamber from the discharge chamber. When the driving gear
rotates, the local vacuum is formed at the place where the gear is
off the mesh, and the liquid is sucked into the pump and filled
with the teeth of the suction chamber, and then enters the
discharge chamber along the inner and outer sides of the crescent
piece in two ways. At the point where the teeth enter engagement,
the liquid present between the teeth is squeezed into the discharge
tube.
